Would you speak out if you knew Her Majesty Revenue and Customs had misused thousands of pounds of public funds to charge you with being an extremist for heckling the British National Party at a peaceful protest in Burnley? Would you refuse to drop your case with the Civil Service Commissioners if you were warned by HMRC you would be sacked if you did not? Transcript of HMRC Investigators Dave King and Janet Robinson interviewing HMRC Manager, Tony Smith on the 11 August, 2004, after Mr Smith had submitted a complaint that HMRC Whistleblower Andi Ali was an extremist for heckling the far right British National Party (BNP) at a peaceful anti-racist protest in Burnley. At an Employment Tribunal hearing in 2007, HMRC solicitor Ian Painter admitted that HMRC had misused public funds to charge Mr Ali with the said offence. He also admitted that all the other allegations Mr Smith made against Mr Ali in this transcript were false, including expressing support for sucide bombers. Despite this, Mr Smith was promoted and Mr Ali sacked after Mr Ali raised concerns under the Public Interest Disclosure Act (1998) and refused to keep quite even when offered a promotion to do so.
